From LCD mobile screen to OLED mobile screen, both the downstream terminal market and the upstream panel factory are debating over the prospect of the former two. However, with the adoption of OLED screens in many high-end flagship mobile phones, OLED panels began to rise and become the mainstream.
 
According to data released yesterday (12) by market research company IHS Markit, in the fourth quarter of 2019, Samsung won the throne of OLED panel of global smart phone with 81.2% market share, LG Display broke through double digits for the first time, reaching 10.8%. BOE, a domestic manufacturer, has dropped for two consecutive quarters since the second quarter of 2019, accounting for 1.6% in the fourth quarter; vicino rose to 4.1% from 1.4% in the third quarter.
 
OLED mobile screen is the trend
 
In the field of OLED smart phone screen, it is almost the world of Korean panel factory, and Samsung is the absolute hegemon. In fact, as early as 2000, Samsung established the OLED project team and upgraded it to OLED business unit in 2003; in 2005, Samsung built a 4.5-generation dedicated production line, and it did not realize mass production until 2007.
 
There have been about 20 panel companies around the world who have studied OLED, but they were forced to give up because of the high cost and short life of OLED panel. Samsung is insisting. In October 2007, Samsung produced a large number of OLED screens. Samsung used the OLED screens in its Galaxy series of mobile phones. At the beginning, the OLED screens were short in life and easy to burn, so the market feedback was not good.
 
In 2010, Samsung solved many problems of OLED. With the growth of Galaxy series mobile phone shipments, Samsung's OLED screen began to go on the right track. With the 10th anniversary of Apple's launch of the high-end iPhone X in 2017, Samsung's OLED screen was adopted. Since then, Apple has begun to OLED high-end series of mobile phones. It is reported that the screen provided by Samsung costs up to $70, which is almost twice the price of the LCD screen used by the iPhone in the past.
 
Domestic mobile phone manufacturers, oppo and vivo firmly used OLED at the earliest, and already used OLED screens on their main models, R series and X series. Huawei's flagship mobile phones mate pro and P30 Pro also use OLED screens. Xiaomi has been using OLED screens on digital flagship mobile phones since 2018, when it was 8 meters old.
 
There is no doubt that OLED has been regarded as the development direction of the future screen in the industry because of its high contrast, high color gamut, high response speed, ultra-thin, low power consumption, flexibility and other unique advantages. According to cinno research's domestic mobile phone sales data, there are about 140 million OLED smart phones in the domestic market in 2019, of which oppo's OLED smart phone sales are about 40.5 million, with a market share of 29.6%, ranking first.
 
It is worth noting that domestic mobile phone manufacturers, led by Huawei, oppo, vivo and Xiaomi, have adopted OLED panels in their midrange mobile phone products, which will also find the reason for the growth of OLED mobile screen demand.
 
How can Chinese firms break through the monopoly of Korean firms?
 
In the near future, Samsung's high monopoly position has been broken with Apple's support of LGC as a new supplier of iPhone OLED panels.
 
According to IHS market data, thanks to Apple's orders, in the fourth quarter of 2019, the global market share of LGD smart phone OLED screen exceeded 10%, reaching 10.8%. In addition, Samsung's market share is still as high as 81.2%, with a total market share of 92%. IHS market predicts that by 2023, the total volume of mobile OLED screen shipments will increase to 825 million yuan. On the one hand, it is a high potential market, and on the other hand, it is a high monopoly. How can Chinese panel manufacturers break through on the track of small and medium-sized OLED panels.
 
At the end of 2017, the first small and medium-sized OLED panel production line of BOE was put into production successfully, and began to supply OLED panels for Huawei mate20 pro in the fourth quarter of 2018. Since then, BOE has opened the road of expansion after the first small and medium-sized OLED panel production line was put into production, and three small and medium-sized OLED panel production lines have been built successively, which are expected to be put into production successively by 2021. It is analyzed that BOE will become the largest small and medium-sized OLED panel production enterprise in China.
 
At present, BOE has successfully entered the supply chain of Huawei's flagship machine, with more news that it will supply OLED screens for iPhone in 2021. In addition, vicino, which provides Xiaomi with OLED screens, has three AMOLED production lines and one AMOLED module production line, of which two AMOLED production lines have been put into production with a cumulative capacity of 45k / about and a cumulative investment of 37.5 billion yuan.
 
Looking at the global OLED supply market, Korean manufacturers are in the leading position, but the manufacturers represented by BOE are striving to catch up. IHS market also predicts that in the next few years, although South Korea is still a country with a high market share of OLED, domestic growth and investment will grow rapidly. By 2020, China's OLED display capacity will account for about 28% of the global production capacity, becoming the second largest OLED display supply country in the world.
